My phone has literally become a projection of how I interact with people… Like every person gets a ringtone based on what I think of them generally, or how I feel at that particular moment. Effectively, everyone I know has their own musical identity, sometimes thought through, other times just random…
Then there’s the all-encompassing ringtone for everyone else… I have very interesting taste, as reflected in some of these selections.
Miss Girl – Originally it was ‘Talkin’ bout a Revolution by Tracy Chapman, now it’s Just A Band’s ‘Hey’… because she’s a fun person and that’s a fun song, with a quirky video.
Mike (my brother) – Take That’s Patience. We’ve come a long way.
My mum – Asa’s Bibanke. I like her sound. Originally it was Coldplay’s Clocks. I don’t really know, I’m a mummy’s boy, I guess…
AIESEC friends – What I want by Fireball. This song has an AIESEC roll call (dance with repeated moves and sense-of-belonging-ness), so it’s fitting that I know one of them is calling…
Steve Mwanda – Just A Band’s Yamo Pa More. One of my more interesting friends from School. The song is about a new bride cooking her in-laws porridge that they don’t like (or don’t accept). Part of a running joke.
Andrew Ogutu – Jay-Z’s Roc Boys. Very interesting guy. He’s got swagger by the bucketful. Fitting song.
Clara – Boy Kill Boy’s Suzie. This girl is equal parts brilliant and scary. A good friend to have.
Mao – Mika’s Love Today. Major rocker and real live Goth. And he likes Mika, so it became his tone.

And everyone else is Coldplay’s Lost!
Just because I’m losing…
